The other day, I tried to list Novus on rpg.net's RPG Index, but was turned down for 2 reasons, the first being it hasn't been released yet, and the second being that I didn't have a cover for it.
I got to thinking, and I want something simple for the cover, and yet something that is also scalable for later covers (perhaps some with real artwork on them).
This is what I came up with - what do you think?

To be perfectly honest Tim...
It's dark and uninspiring.
But it's better than nothing until you get something better!
EDIT: Oh! You mean for the playtest version? My bad. I was thinking of printed books you would see in the store.

It's dark and uninspiring.
I agree.
-
Is this any better?

Or how about this one..

I like the contrast of the white dragon on the black background, with the gold letters. Maybe I'm biased, as us Pittsburghers like the Black & Gold... hehe.
-
Basically, what I am doing with these later covers is finding free clipart and images on the web and then adjusting them accordingly...
The dragon was a free clipart image, but quite frankly his resolution isn't high enough..
here is another possibility for a center image...

This is the one I am liking the best...

I'm with Sam, I like the dragon one.

I just can't give you any feedback on this, just this: The cover should be designed carefully and not just to get the game into the rpg.net gaming index as soon as possible. Apart from that, I leave it to you to talk about this.

I agree with Raf, and to tell the truth I'd prefer to see a nice big "Novus" logo, rather than some random clipart. I know that art tends to be pricey, but maybe you could find someone who's just getting started and have the logo designed for a relatively low price...

Arioch - yes, we will likely do that for the final release, but for the Open Beta, I am simply trying to come up with something cool and interesting to attract attention.
Here is another possibility.....

And here is another possibility

The yellow one is not bad!
-
The yellow tribal dragon image cover (sample cover 3) is my favorite so far as well...
-
Here is it again, with Open Beta added to it..
This is my favorite so far...

The yellow dragon ain't all that bad. I think if it was white though, I would be happy. It makes it jump out from the flat background I think with the contrast of white and black. If it stays black and gold though, I'll be alright.

I think #3 is the best of all of them also.

Okay, have made a change in the cover for Novus. The following will now be the cover.
Now granted, this isn't the final cover, but the cover that we will be using for the Open Beta until we can get the final artwork for it.

Personally, I like this cover even as a production cover. It really brings out the game as itself: simple yet complex at the same time.
Very "Feng Shui", in my humble opinion. Very much with my impression of a KISS ideology towards gaming.
Edit:
By "this cover" I meant the current cover; which is the one in Tim's post immediately above this post. :-[

I was bored while on a conference call and threw these together. Just putzing to pass the time.

I really like that one.
