Title: Renaming Universal Spells?
Post by: imported_Rasyr on April 21, 2011, 10:58:20 PM
Considering how all of the other Schools of Magic are named, continuing to call them "Universal Spells" seems a bit awkward to me.

How would you feel if I renamed them to "Cantrips". They are the same thing, but Cantrips are what ALL who learn magic can use (even those who are not associated with a given School of Magic).

Thoughts? Opinions?

I dunno...
"Cantrip" seems/sounds... well, weak.(http:///frown.gif)Hmmm.... I guess "cantrips" would do if nothing better comes along...

Yeah, Cantrips sounds like zero level spells, I'd use something different.

The spells aren't zero level, but they are the easiest to learn, so easy that every school, and even non-spell users can learn them. So, they are part of each school, yet also part of none as well...

Cantrips isn't a perfect name, but so far, nothing else is either...

What about :
- basic spells,
- common spells,
- first grade spells,
- Vulgate (or any bad low latin translation),
- Prosaic.

So far I like "Prime" and "Prosaic", these sound the best to me.

I like "Mundane" the best, but "Common" and maybe even "Standard" aren't too bad.

I like Universal Spells...it tells us exactly what they are. Spells that anybody can get regardless of class. Universal across the board. Cantrips would work as well as that implies that they are the easier and cheaper spells that anybody can get access to. I don't understand where Prime or Prosaic comes from or how those words apply to these spells.

They are just Spells that anybody can get and have no School or Class associations.

"Common" or "Mundane" seems like a good fit to describe the general means of accessing the spells. A Fighter with the ability to cast "Common" spells sounds right to me; both in flavor and function.

how about "Neutral" Spells (i.e. as in they are neutral in relationship to the other schools of magic)?

I don't like it.
The name "Neutral" carries too much "alignment" baggage with it.
I would chose a different name... like "Common" or "Mundane"...

I like 'Low' Magic.  Or maybe even Hedge Magic.  I don't like Neutral Spells or Mundane (Common, etc) as magic shouldn't be mundane... (http:///wink.gif)

I might go with Prosaic, since it means "common", and these spells are common to all casters (not common in the more general sense).

It it just me, or does "Prosaic" sound like a medical supplement to prevent heart-burn?
