I made a linguist character for the campaign I'm playing. I wanted to be the diplomat of our group and languages happen to be a good start in addition to my nice influence roll.
Characters may learn, by purchasing the appropriate Talents,
additional languages. They may know a maximum number of
languages equal to 5+ their Intelligence Stat Bonus.
With the above statement and at a max intelligence of 20 I can learn a maximum of 8 languages. While that is a lot based on the languages listed in the book, I understand that there are a lot of other languages that may be added to the system, and the GM in my group has already added a few. I have learned all the languages I can (according to above rule).
Could a talent or some other option be made available to allow someone to learn languages in addition to those allowed by the 5+int bonus?

You could just ignore the rule with the GM's permission. (http:///wink.gif)

And I might just remove that limitation on the number of languages known, now that I am considering it...

If players want to learn more than 8 languages...I applaud them! I would remove the limitation too.

I cannot remember why I put that restriction in there in the first place, but the more that I think about it, the more it seems that I may have dealt with the original issue in another way (but I cannot remember what that original issue was... heheh).

sweetness! That would make my role of diplomat of the party much easier.

I wonder if a "universal tranlator" ability might be useful...

Sounds like a nifty Talent, but one that would need to have a high cost -- though this could be mitigated somewhat by limiting it to non-ancient languages (it wouldn't include magical languages anyways), to only current languages. Also, could limit it to only spoken languages and then have a second talent for written languages (i.e. to translate a written language, the character needs to write out the translation, which is done in a trance).
Interesting ideas...
