Title: [[Idea]] Profession Packages
Post by: imported_Rasyr on June 21, 2012, 08:05:25 PM
This morning, while working on the Training Path article for Libram Novus #5, and as I was leafing through some older products that I own (taking a break, trying to spark some ideas...), I sparked an idea (just not the one I was looking for....)

In short, for a standard Novus character, the player gets to select one or more skills as being Favored, and gets to select how to spend his character points on skills and talents and so forth....

Well, what if we created something of a Sub-Class or Profession Package. Each package would be specific to a single Class, and gaining the package would be a one time thing (much like the Backgrounds).

The trick here would be to figure out a way to  balance the loss of choice (likely by 5 or 10 extra CP). The player would then do his stats, select race, select background and either select a Profession (which also selects his Class), or select a normal Class. Now, the Professions could/would include multiple levels of development, not be limited to only first level. Thus, if a player has to create a new character, he could do so quickly and easily, at least to a certain point

For example - presuming that Professions are built using an extra 10 CP for a first level Profession -- note: players do NOT get extra CP when they do normal development after play begins):

Kameha Brethren(Level 1 - 40 CP total)
This Profession is a sub-class of Martial Artist. The Brethren are taught a secret method of focusing their Chi and releasing it as a bolt of pure chi energy that can be used as an attack.

And for this profession, all of the skills listed in the Profession would be Favored skills, the player has no choice and no options regarding that (but he also got 10 extra CP in the exchange as well).

So, basically, I would do my stats, choose race, choose background, choose Profession, record equipment, tally totals, play

no Character Points to worry about, at least not for this...

However, if I had to make a 3rd level character, I could take the above to make a 1st level character and then do 2 levels of development accordingly...

I think it is a good option either to introduce new players to the game quickly or create experienced characters quickly. You want to play a knight, you just take this profession and begin with a 5th level character will all appropriate skills and talents.
I am not sure it is an option I would use except maybe for creating generic NPCs precisely because it removes all the fun from the character generation.

Yes, but it is a cool option, and it DOES show less experienced gamers how it could be done....

Plus, as an added benefit, it could be used for such things as Quick Starts and tournament modules, to allow players to quickly create characters (hmm... If I do it this way, I may end up not giving a few extra CP (or perhaps only 5) since I would want the characters to be roughly equal to what they can do with Classes. But then again, I take away about 5 CP in going the Class-less route as well, since that allows for MORE customization....

I agree with you, it's a cool option. Professions allow quick but less flexible character creation and so is useful for beginners, NPC samples and tournament game. I can easily see a bunch of professions making up a Libram Novus.

It sounds like an interesting option.

You know, just had another couple of thoughts.....

Professions are sort of like Training Packages from RM, but each is restricted to a single Class....

You basically pay  "x * 15" Character Points for each one, and in exchange, you get predetermined skills and/or talents, and at the end of it, you are x level.

Definitely the restriction of only one Profession per character. But, Training Paths could then be used to allow a character to "acquire" a second, third, etc.. Profession (by making the skill ranks be goals, and then acquisition can give access to any talents that a profession has, allowing the player to purchase it, even if not a Trainable Talent normally....)

Okay, so I am trying to come up with some Profession Packages to create and detail for the next issue of Libram Novus. Here is what I have so far. Not all of these will end up in the Libram Novus. If I have enough, I might create a separate product just for these...

Anyways, here is the list I have so far -- additional suggestions are welcome!
