Other Game Systems / White Wolf

More the Old World of Darkness than the New.

You probably already know it, but WW is releasing a 20th year edition of vampire the masquerade As for me, I kinda like the setting (some parts of it, at least), but really dislike the system.

Novus RPG / Table Placement Poll
« on: March 13, 2011, 12:02:05 PM »
IMHO the best solution would be placing them both where they are AND at the end of the book as a quick reference, but if space is a problem, I0d prefer to have them at the end of the book

Novus RPG / Social Hitpoints
« on: February 13, 2011, 11:54:17 AM »
It's not a matter of roleplaying vs rollplaying (nor of people's skills in roleplaying imho), in any game with social "combat" you roleplay social interactions as much as you would in any other rpg. Throwing dice and having detailed rules for it doesn't reduce social interactions to a "series of rolls", much like having detailed rules for combat doesn't make it a series of "I hit him, I miss, I miss...". Quite the opposite, imho it greatly enhance the chance for good roleplaying in those situations.

OTOH, I don't think that it would be a good idea introducing similar rules in Novus. They work well in games focused on intrigue and social interactions, but as Kormir said, Novus is more action-oriented.

General Discussion / How real is too real?
« on: February 08, 2011, 09:55:34 AM »
Well, I find coherence within the setting and the premises of the game one of the most important things in a game. And that means that if I'm playing in a "realistic" setting I don't want anything that couldn't happen in real life.
OTOH I think that trying to simulate the world's physics with game mechanics is generally a bad idea. First because is basically impossible to write rules that mimic reality perfectly. Second because you can have a game with a "realistic" feel even without this kind of mechanics.

Other Game Systems / Old School Retro-Clone Love

If you like storygames and retro-clones, try also Old School Hack (http://www.oldschoolhack.net/), it's a very low-prep game and it mix an od&d feel with "modern" ideasĀ

Ecthelion: yes, my are just assumption, based on the posts I've read on the ice forums. I don't think those discussions are going anywhere, probably there's much more going on in the background, but of that I know nothing andI can only guess basing my ideas on what I can read

That would be really cool, I thought of writing something like that myself a lot of times!

Well, discussions about a new edition have been going on for a long time and imho they were bound to resurface short after the "new ICE" announcement.
To tell the truth, I'd like to see a new edition of RM, but the "new ICE" seems too concerned about keeping happy the old fans (all of them simultaneously... lol) and maintaining a "RM purity" to actually change somtehing.

General Discussion / Interesting Gaming Links

interesting, thought I don't agree conmpletely with the blogger, I think that he underlines some very valid points.
Somewhat related, an old article that I read some time ago and, like this one, made me think about my games: http://ptgptb.org/0027/theory101-02.html

Other Game Systems / I am a fan of Hero
« on: January 07, 2011, 10:49:22 AM »
Never played it, mainly because I found out GURPS first. I've heard they're similar so I never felt the need of trying it (I'm not a fan of GURPS, I mean it's nice but character creation takes too long, and there are too much options for my tastes).
So, what's great about Hero? What makes it different from GURPS?

Novus RPG / Sample Novus Cover

I agree with Raf, and to tell the truth I'd prefer to see a nice big "Novus" logo, rather than some random clipart. I know that art tends to be pricey, but maybe you could find someone who's just getting started and have the logo designed for a relatively low price...

General Discussion / What are you currently reading?
« on: February 22, 2011, 02:08:45 PM »
I've started the latest Umberto Eco's novel: the cemetery of prague. It's really funny and interesting, mixing historical and imaginary characters/facts... it really sucked me in from the beginning!

I don't know that one, will take a look at it though.
I have found that when you leave the territory of classical fantasy, things often get more interesting, it's like only a few authors manage to get out of the shadow of Tolkien, when it comes to fantasy of the Elf, Dwarf and Orc variety.

Then I suggest you American Gods or Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I also enjoyed Jonathan Strange & Mister Norrell, by Susanna Clarke: set in an alternative 19 century England, with magic being re-discovered by the two protagonists. It's a bit strange, but with a lot of interesting ideas on magic, magicians and faeries.
