Novus 2e / Re: Combat Example Questions

Hi, I really love the way that Novus 2e has come together, so much so that I ordered one of everything  :).   I hope to run it for my group soon!  To that end, I am studying the rules, like you do, and I got a bit confused after reading the Combat Example vs the combat chapter in the main book.

There seems to be a discrepancy in the way Scaled Damage is calculated in the Combat Example and the rule book.

from Novus 2e pg. 52:

Quote
Scaled Damage - For every point above the target's DT that the attack roll is, the attacker gets to add 1 additional point of damage to the total amount dealt. However, Scaled Damage cannot exceed an amount equal to twice the Base Damage (BD) of the weapon or attack being used.

Example: A Mace has a DR of6*. So, if our
character has a Strength of 3, that means that the Mace has a Base Damage of 9, and that the amount of Scaled Damage possible is 18. This actually gives the weapon an effective damage range of 9 to 27 (9+18=27) points, before adjusting for the foe's Armor Rating.

in the combat example, pg 6, round 1 phase 3:

Quote
Patches: Patches stabs at Groutok and he rolls a natural 20. This is  called a Super Nova Roll. Patches earns 5 Fate Points from this,  and the roll is treated as if he rolled a 40, adding in his 8 AB gives us a total of 48 for the attack. This is 27 points higher Groutok's DT of 21. Now, the Broadsword that Patches is using does 10
Hits, which means that he will do a maximum of another 10 Hits of Scaled Damage, for 20 Hits total. After we subtract 4 Hits from Groutok's AR, that gives us a total of 16 Hits.

(italics added)

It seems that the maximum damage in the example is Scaled Damagemax  is equal to the Base Damage, giving a possible damage range of BD to 2×BD. but in the rulebook it shows that Scaled Damagemax  is twice the BD, giving a damage range of BD to 3×BD.

It's entirely possible that I missed something about how Super Nova rolls work, but I didn't see anything that made me think it shouldn't count as 40 when doing the scaled damage calculation.  But it seems like even if that is an exception, it would yield 7 points of SD in the example (20roll+8AB-21DT=7SD), not 10, and it still doesn't clarify the intent on maximum SD.

Which one is correct, or am I just misunderstanding something?

Novus RPG / Saves

Yeah that makes sense.  I actually really like resolve as a stat vs. willpower as well, because it's easier to keep the distinct from Wisdom in my brain.

Hi!

I like this change, as it simplifies things for people used to d20. That said, isn't it a little easier to change the save name to 'Resolve' and leave the stat 'Willpower'?

Willpower doesn't seem to be used by any skills except Spellcasting and Magecraft for Mystics, so maybe not a big deal.

Novus RPG / Novus digest version -- opinions wanted
« on: April 19, 2014, 05:11:47 PM »
I wanted to chime in that I really like the digest format for PDF viewing, and I like it in print as well. Personally I'm hoping to see the Liberi Novus as well. In fact, my ideal would be to put the collected libram novus books into one digest sized book in print and PDF, and see the digest format available as a print copy too.  I'd order 2 of each (one for me, one for the group) if that happened.

Gamer's Gallery / Tweaking the magic system to build ritual magic

This stuff is great and I'm stealing it whole without a drop of remorse.  It happens to fit really neatly into the game I'm prepping for this summer.  Good job!

Novus RPG / Libram Novus #8 -- Now Available...
« on: April 19, 2014, 05:32:03 PM »
LN#8 is excellent as always.  I'm in the midst of prepping for my game (I'm the GM) when I visit my family this summer, so I've been making up characters, studying the rules, playing some mock battles etc.

I wanted to chime in on combat styles, as I feel this is the single hairiest bit of the ruleset at this point.   Part of it is that it feels like a bit of terminology overload, with too many similar words used for things which are different things - combat skills, combat styles, combat moves.  For me, the rules would stick to my aging brain better if they had names like 'weapon skills', 'combat styles', and 'maneuvers' or something like that. There's lots of options obviously and I see that the higher level abstraction of 'combat skills' encompassing both styles and regular weapon (group) skills is useful in character generation ("pick any 3 combat skills as favored", etc).    I also really like the style abilities, and feel like they're necessary to make combat styles desirable for a player (from an optimization standpoint, which they're going to do...at least my crowd).

That said, I'm pretty much perplexed by the Sword & Board style ability in LN#8.  It seems to be more or less a repeat of Shield Bash, I'm not clear on the AP cost to use it, and I'm also not clear if this is supposed to be an extra move that the player can use in the same round as making a normal attack or instead of a normal attack.

As Novus is so incredibly hackable, I'm considering making the S&B style ability simply that a character with this style doesn't lose their shield DEF bonus on any round that they use a combat move that normally includes that as a consequence  -- Shield Bash, Shield Parry, Shield Ram.  I'm not sure if that's overpowered or not, but it's simple and it does still require that the CPs spent on the combat moves to be useful, which seems appropriate.

I've not tested this tweak at all, so any thoughts on that would be greatly appreciated.
