Novus 2e / Novus 2.0 tidbits
« on: January 24, 2019, 04:07:45 AM »
This looks really great. It has a strong GURPS thing going on but with a Novus take on it. It is a really cool direction you are going in. I love that you have maintained a nicely trim skills list but have lots of interesting options for backgrounds and professions. That is exactly the right approach I think for a game these days. Keep the goodness flowing!

Novus RPG / So new year coming up...

Sorry about the tone, I know at times I can be a bit.... abrupt. And honestly I am not even sure why I care, I don't really have a dog in the fight as they say (someone says, somewhere). I guess I am just hoping that a bit of direct communication might actually elicit a meaningful response. Ares, you are the only one that has turned out anything for Novus in several years, or even posted anything substantive, and Tim can't even be bothered to respond to your posts. For a couple years it has been basically nothing. I get that he might be busy, but how hard is it to get on your own company's forum and post something once a month. I find it very disrespectful.

A couple months ago I posted about basically what you are saying, lets find a way to involve the community more to take up some of the slack. Let Tim find a role that works for him. I would be willing to help out. But he didn't respond. I got interested because I had been working on an adventure arc for HARP. I had never run Novus, but it looked good, and when I saw that 2E was coming out, I thought I would wait and take advantage of the opportunity... It is a path to madness to care more than the principle of a company.

I think Tim is a very talented designer, and again, I am pushing because I want the system to succeed. I am not saying that he has to push out product every month. But I would like. to know if there is real hope of some life. And yeah, it is a for profit company and I think it is reasonable to hope for more responsible communication.

Well, we shall see if this shakes anything loose. If not, I will go back to HARP, it is a great system in the main.

And Ares I will try to be nicer in the future if this conversation leads to anything!

Novus RPG / NOVUS MINI #3

Now it is pretty cool! I actually really like that you take a crypt, very traditional mini dungeon setting, and run it with insectoids. That is great, something a little fresh. And now the excavation is a great plot hook. Nice.

Novus RPG / NOVUS MINI #3

Hey there.
Ok, this one for me falls a bit flat. It feels random, like why are there kobolds, giant ants, and undead all here? Is it a crypt, because there is just one room that is called burial room, the rest don't completely make sense, why is there a common room in a crypt? What about picking a theme, like undead crypt, and running with that. Maybe make the ants into spiders, more atmospheric, and the kobolds into cultists with a necromancer leader as a boss battle.....
Just random thoughts

Novus RPG / NOVUS MINI#2

I for one really like your minis. It is great to have a quick encounter to drop into a session and you do a good job of hinting at lots of good adventure hooks.  The only thing I would like to see with this one is some way of handling the Rot Ravens attacking the son. Do you see it as just a combat, but then it would be nice to have some stats for the boy. But that can be hard to balance, if he is strong enough to fight it is too easy, weak and he gets killed off quite soon. Some other mechanism, like x number of rounds, maybe make it more obvious to the characters that there is a countdown...
it is a good encounter.
Thanks!

Novus RPG / Shattered Moon - A Sword & Sorcery Setting for NOVUS
« on: November 08, 2018, 08:44:23 PM »
I like the dark, strange and evocative type of take on magic, but from a game mechanics perspective, this might hamper magic using characters. Are you thinking about a way to bump them up somewhere to offset the difficulty of doing magic over the course of an adventuring day? like more powerful spells, access  to other powers, ????

It is an interesting idea. The post-apocalyptic magic thing is fun. What do you plan on doing about technology, sort of technomancer type stuff? I guess the question is, what does civilization mean in your setting? Is it high tech arcologies, or ????

Ok, Tim. I have liked your system for some time now and hate to see how things have fallen apart. An advantage of niche gaming is you have a community to use! Is there anything we can do as a community to push this thing along a bit? Editing, playtesting, anything? Would it not be better to even just throw everything you have up on the website now for a beta test than the current state? Right now people only mention Novus to say it is dead, and really it seems that is the case. It is sad because your system really has potential. I get that things can be hard at times, but then open things up and get some community energy in there to take some of the burden.

So, how about a no bullshit assessment of what the future of the game is. It is your company Tim, so you can do as you please of course, but it would be nice to have real honesty. I understand that things can be challenging and that rpg design is probably not in the top 20 things for you at this time in life, but if that is the case, how about coming up with a plan to deal with the situation instead of just saying you hope that you might consider doing something again.... I know that is very harsh (Merry Christmas!) but Tim I think you are a very very talented game designer but seem to have some difficulty with follow-through. And think of it like this, the only thing worse than customers complaining that you are not making enough stuff for them to buy is when no one cares if you are making product.....
