Static HP vs. Increasing Skills?
« on: September 02, 2013, 10:01:37 PM »
A player in my group brought up something;

I've found more than one spot in the book where it says you gain extra hit points per level.  But I've found nothing that specifically states how many you get.

Anyone have any ideas?

We pointed out that it was a leftover from the BETA, and then...

I'm not sure about that.  It doesn't make sense.  has we gain levels, so to do the monsters we fight gain levels.  Which will increase the amount of damage we deal, and receive.  If our HP's stay the same, there will come a point, where a single attack roll, could kill us in a single attack.

level 8 troll, for example.  19 attack bonus.  lets say he rolls fairly good, got one explosion.  rolled a 10 and 7.  on the explosion rolled a 6.  total attack bonus is 42.  my defense is 16.  That's 2 boons, and the troll opted for double base damage.  base damage for a lvl 8 troll is 13.  doubled equals 26.  42-16 = 26 damage, plus 26 damage from double base equals 52 hp's gone.  In one hit.  I'm now -2 HP's.  in the first round, in the first hit, i'm outa commission.

I can see where we can buy additional HP's from major and minor physical training and if we're relegated to doing that to gain additional HP's, then I find that imbalanced.  Gaining HP's per level is practically mandatory if you hope to survive encounters which only get more and more tougher.  so instead of getting 15 CP's to spend every level, it's really only 11.(4 points always reserved for buying major physical training)  That sucks!

Thoughts?

1) I wish you guys could give me page references, so I can find those holdovers.... and make sure that they are added to errata and stamped out when I finally get around to fixing the PDF/print version.

2) As for the second quote --

One of the core precepts of Novus is that any character has a chance of defeating/killing any other character. This usually involves lots of luck, but there is always that chance.

Additionally, there are numerous methods that a player could use to increase the character's Defense. I notice that the example specifically gives an explosive roll to the troll, but ignores using any method of defending the character other than base Defense. In my opinion, that is a bit unrealistic right there.
