info on character stats
« on: February 20, 2011, 03:38:27 PM »
Just browsing through the PDF...so I apologize if this is in there and I missed it.

But, one thing I'd like to see is a chart "explaining" the range of character stats.  In other words, converting the # to some "real world" equivalent.   Obviously, it helps me gauge what the stat means and would help in building NPC's/creatures.

Here's a terrible example for strength, but I think all stats could do something similar:

0
1-2     lift approx 50 pounds
3-5     lift approx 75 pounds
6-10   lift approx 100 pounds
11-12 lift approx 150 pounds
.
.
.
20 lift approx 600 pounds

A chart like that would help me determine if a gorilla should be strength 30 or strength 40.  Also it would help keep the stats consistent....I've seen some games were a large beast like a T-Rex barely has more strength than the top-level human.

What does Intelligence 18 mean?   Is that a genius?   Is a Dex of 20 an "olympic" level athlete?   Would a "Hitler/Stalin" be Charisma 20 or 14, or a 30?

Welcome, and that is a good suggestion...

10-12 should be considered the average for humans, so we should start off building such tables from there.

Once we come up with some guidelines, then I can decide whether or not to include them in the core book, or put them out as a free download (with a mention in the book).

Also, how about a chart showing the stat-max per race?

The paragraph below explains the max's...but a chart would be easier and save the reader from making their own chart:

Example: Halflings have a +2 modifier to
Dexterity and a -4 modifier to Strength. The
player would generate their stats as normal, and
then apply the modifiers to both the actual stat
and the stat's maximum.
If the player generates a 16 for his Dexterity and
17 for his Strength; then after applying his racial
modifiers, he would have a 18 (16 + 2 = 18) for his
Dexterity and a 13 (17 - 4 = 13) for his Strength.
And his potential maximums would be 22 (20 + 2 =
22) for Dexterity and 16 for Strength (20 - 4 = 16).
