Dodge & Boons
« on: January 06, 2012, 02:31:57 PM »
Yesterday, I stumbled upon an idea: why not use combat boon points with the dodge maneuvers ? Regular boon points are OK, but some combat boon points could have great tactical effects.
I don't think that "skilled attack" or other damaging options should be used, but others such as combat shuffle, defensive posture, initiative boost... could give a tactical edge to the nimble character.

Ok, not sure I am understanding you properly....

Are you saying that we should remove some (or all) of the damage increasing boons, and replace them with other boons that work towards giving some sort of tactical advantage (like additional temp increases to DEF or such things)?

No, no. I am speakin 8)g specifically about using combat boons when dodging. That is, you roll your save vs Dex or Acrobatics and then, if you get one or more boon points, you use comabt boons rather than skill boons.
The normal result when you dodge is a bonus of 5+1 for every 3 points above the TN. I propose that if the roll is high enough (10 points above the TN), you earn 1 boon point to use on the combat boons table.
The restriction on damage increasing boons follow this logic: you don't add to your damage without rolling for attack. So if you makes a high dodge roll, you can choose "maneuver" boons (combat shuffle...) but no damage increasing boon (skilled attak...). To make higher damage, you should gain combat boons from your attack roll, as currently written. A good dodge allows you to increase your initiative, maybe gain a positional advantage... but no additional damage.

I hope this is more explicit.

Okay, to paraphrase, to make sure that I am understanding properly....  If that is accurate, I see no problems with that, and would have no problems including such in the rules, as it makes for perfect sense. -- Dodging with a purpose... heheh

That's perfectly accurate.
