Dwelfs and Wild Elves.....
« on: November 14, 2024, 03:40:54 PM »
I was recently looking through some old AD&D books and  cam across the Grugach (Wild ELves) and found this description (Note: Wild ELves are about 4 1/2 feet tall)

Quote
The grugach are "wild" elves akin to sylvan ones, but smaller, thinner. and very fair They are completely xenophobiC, dlstrusting even other sorts of elves. Thus, they are seldom, if ever, encountered outside their tribal bands.

Except as noted, grugach conform to the specifics of wood elves and elfkind in general. Desptte their small stature, grugach have broad shoulders and great strength (add +2 on strength dice roll, treating 19 or 20 as 18).

Grugach are not magic-users, but dual-classed individuals will be fighter/drutds. The grugach are on good terms with all animals of the forest, save those of evil nature. They will often (70%) have stags for mounts.

About 20% of random contacts made supposedly with wood elves will actually be wtth grugach. All adult grugach are able to set traps. These consist principally of pits and snares ina nd around their home territory. All such traps are well concealed, and there is almost a 90% probability that creatures passing near one will be caught in it. If characters passing through a trapped area examtne it carefully, likelihood of being caught in a trap is reduced to 30%. Pits are normally 10 feet deep and spiked, so damage is 1-4 (fall into earth-floored pit), plus 1-6 per spike, plus poison (50% chance). Snares are usually set to encircle and jerk creatures off their feet and suspend them 5 feet or more above the ground. Some snares can be deadfalls, where a heavy log crashes down for 5d6-8d6 of damage and pins the victtm as well.

This is very much how I was picturing how the Aeshi (Dwelfs) living, although my inspiration were more along the lines of the Elves from ElfQuest, the wolf rider ones....

After reading this, I am considering making the Dwelfs a little taller (they are around 3.5 feet in FX, so I was thinking of making the average for them be 4 feet tall instead), but leaving them as they are elsewise.

I was also considering giving them the nickname of Wild Elves as well (even though they are NOT true elves -- I already mention that some call them Shadow Elves, so adding Wild would not be a big addition...

Thoughts? Opinions?

Cool background. One of my players used to play a Dwelf. All the others were making fun of him for being an unlikely crossbreed between a DWarf and an ELF. Lots of fun in an otherwise dark story.

There is a lto more to the backstory on how I came up with how my Dwelfs operate, but Cutter from ElfQuest was an influence. The Psi-Elves from teh World of Synnibar were another inspiration, as well as the Pecwae from the Soveriegn Stone setting, and the feral Halflings from the Blackmoor setting by Dave Arneson....

I keep wanting to get them something like a yoyo as a weapon (basically a metal spheriod on a long string that was spun like a yoyo and flicked out to strike a foe, but to make it work properly would likely need tinker Gnomes who could gimmick up a self-winding spring inside it.... (since my Ethori in Anwyn will have early-ish firearms, having them build this weapon might work as well -- and then they sell them to the Aeshi, who like the idea of a handheld weapon with Reach (but it cannot be used to Parry...)

Ooohhh... ideas.....
