Expanding the Anwyn timeline

I have been thinking and thinking and I am finding that I don't really like the 130 year timeline. It is too short overall.

So, I am going to expand it from 130 to 530 years.

This way, there will not be any adventurers who remember the homeworlds that their races come from

High Elves live up to 600 years so, the only elves still alive who would maybe remember their home world are those who were under 100 years old (at MOST), and that means that if they are still alive, they will unlikely still be adventuring, they would then be the elders of the High Elves....

I am wanting to put together an Anwyn Primer kinda like how Imaginary Turtles did with their Aenwyld setting....

And so I wanna get the timeline right.. And after some thought, 530 sounds close to what I want/need. (Harn has something like a 730 year timeline).

I am planning for the first Conclave of Races not to happen for at least 50-60 years

I am planning on the coastline mapping not to take place until sometime after the year 100, and for it to take about 10 years to accomplish.

I am planning on the High Elves not making their exodus to Tir Hoige until about 50 years after the mapping is done and for it to last for about 30-40 years.

And the creation of the Grey Elves not happen for about 75 years after the Exodus (this would be somewhere around the Year 200 or so).

Year 400 - discovery of the Mother Currents/Roads -- passages to other worlds, not dependant upon the many random portlas in the Esker Highlands

Year 450 - creation of the Adventurer's Guild and the bounty on knowledge from interior explorations - also the  founding of Hyb Ciuin

462 -= Hyb Ciuin's walls completed.... Contruction begins on the buildings within the walls.....



Some other notable event sto add would be nice -- so suggestions welcome,,,,

0 CE – The Gods, working in Compact, begin transporting the various races to Anwyn. As the races are brought to Anwyn, they are given knowledge of a common language, called Ænglits, which allows the races to communicate with each other. They are also provided with knowledge of the existence of the other races and the rough location where they were settled. As the peoples are brought to Anwyn, they are also told that they will be unable to return to their homeworlds.

1 CE – An ancient city found on the eastern coast of the Bay of Sorrows is the landing point for the D’Anui. They call this city Hyb Rasil, and determine to repopulate and rebuild it as the seat of their new country, Cymbri, named after the original homeland of the majority of the D’Anui. The Ethori found their capital city of Zhor Isin in the northeastern portion of what becomes known as Bryni Weall, the Wall of Hills. The Aeshi are settled into the Dark Woods, called Duin Weald by the D’Anui, along the southern coast of Tir Tuath.

2 CE – The Elves settle into Ælftyr and the Sylvari found the city of Yntys while the Verdyri make a number of small villages in the forest, Gwydd Dwyg. The Dvargr are settled along the southern slopes of the Coastal Mountains and start digging Nidrheim, the capital of their small nation of Chorak.

3 CE – The Odavi, a quasi-nomadic race, make their home in the northern portions of Tir Caledi, in what becomes known as Xondaz. And the ships of the Utari are guided to the southern coast of the Bay of Sorrows, not far west of the Wall of Hills, where they found Kaido, which becomes the capital of Utara.

5 CE – The Sylvari send Verdyri messengers to each of the other races on Anwyn, inviting them to a Council of Races, in order to make decisions that might affect all those upon Anwyn.

10 CE – The first Council of Races is held at Yntys. All of the races, except for the Odavi, attend. They determine that first order of business is to figure out how big Anwyn really is. Several ships from both Hyb Rasil and Yntys are commissioned to sail around Anwyn and map its coastline in a joint effort. This is intended as just a general mapping expedition. The ships finally set sail upon the turning of the new year. The D’Anui ships head one direction, while the Sylvari head in the other, from their respective ports. They are each instructed to turn back if they have not encountered one another within a year. They also settle upon a single currency system to be used by all of the races.

15 CE – The initial mapping of the coastline is complete and the individual charts and maps compiled into a single cohesive map. The ships are again commissioned to make a more detailed survey of the coast. This will take much longer than the year spent getting a general idea of Anwyn’s size.

18 CE – The second Council of Races is held, this time at Hyb Rasil. The Sylvari stake a claim on the region that they later rename as Tir Hoige, and the Aeshi lay claim to the dark forest in Tir Caledi. A number of magical practitioners, from all of the attending races, band together to form the Arcanist’s Guild. The Council also decides to send an expedition to make contact with the Odavi and invite them to join the council.

20 CE – An expedition to make contact with the Odavi forms at the trade town of Na-Kutha, just outside the borders of Ælftyr. They are joined by a group of several dozen Aeshi, who are heading to the dark forests of Tir Caledi, which will become known as Canga Vytr, which means Wraithwood in the Aeshi language, to prepare the way for others to migrate there.

21 CE – The expedition reaches the river known as Mirr Afon (Mirr River). The members of the expedition make a crossing to an island in the middle of the river while the majority of the Aeshi turn east into the Wraithwood itself. The expedition is met, on the island, by representatives of Odavi. The Odavi tell them of Wybr Ghenfl, the Monster Pass, which has kept them occupied since they discovered it, and which is the reason that they had not previous Councils. It is a hilly valley stretching from the Esker Highlands to the southern portion of Xondaz, the Odavi homeland.

22 CE – An agreement is reached where a small town, to be known as Mirrhyc, will be built on the island. Adventurers will be allowed to travel from Mirrhyc to the Esker Highlands, by way of Wybr Ghenfl. All Odavi lands north of Bryni Aryfn, the Border Hills, are forbidden to non-Odavi without specific invitation.

25 CE – The Sylvari begin their passage to the west, taking ship from Yntys to Tir Hoige, and found the city of Avel Lin in a sheltered bay along its sheltered coast. A few groups of Verdyri also move to Tir Hoige for the forests to be found there.

29 CE – The full Council of Races meets for the first time, with all 8 of the races of Anwyn. They decide meet every 5 years to discuss matters important to all of the races. The first order of business is the formation of the Caledi Guard, whose goal is to make sure that the trade routes to and from Mirrhyc and the newly commissioned town of Na-Rukag are safe. The Caledi Guard also intend to build outposts at the southern end of Wybr Ghenfl, with the permission of the Odavi, to help protect against monsters coming down out of the highlands.

31 CE – The Sylvari complete their exodus to the west, only a few hundred remain at Yntys and Hyb Rasil.

33 CE – The Dvargr finish their initial work on Nidrheim, their capital, and follow the river, which they call Esom Elv, to the coast and begin building the port city of Sjohofn.

36 CE – The Ethori negotiate a deal with the Dvargr allowing for the formation of a couple of Gnomish towns in the western foothills of the Coastal Mountains, one in the north and one to the south. The Ethori start with the city in the southwestern foothills, Zhubroch.

43 CE – Members of the Arcanist’s Guild, led by Talyfr, figure out how to access the Mother Roads, and they decide to split off and form the Voyager’s Guild. The use of the Mother Roads allows for swifter travel with less danger across Anwyn. The drawback of this is that the travelers do not actually see any of the terrain that they travel across.

52 CE – The first expedition to Tuist Rhion returns bearing strange magical crystals. After some experimentation, it is determined that some of these crystals can be used to ease travel upon the Mother Roads.

57 CE – The Voyager's Guild, using the crystals from Tuist Rhion, figure out how to access the Mother Roads of the Sea, sometimes called the Mother Currents. This opens up the possibility of trade with other worlds.

61 CE – The first voyage to another world is made. During this first foray, they encounter people in a land known as Iweriu, a land with little magic. After spending nearly a year visiting the ports of Iweriu and the nearby land of Albyon, the Wayfinder is able to guide the ship to a second and a third and a fourth world before finally guiding the ship home.

65 CE – The Voyager’s Guild decide to focus on the Mother Currents, and let those who travel in Anwyn do so in the normal way. This is to free up their membership, which has always been low, for focus more on aiding trade with other worlds.

68 CE – The Council of Races decides that it should create another access point to the interior of Anwyn, to allow for more exploration, and easier access to the crystals from Tuist Rhion. Thus, they commission the founding of Hyb Ciuin. This city will be a Free City, not beholden to any one nation, but ruled by a council formed from representatives of each.

75 CE – The site for Hyb Ciuin is selected and plans made to build a walled city, surrounded by a moat on two sides, a river on the third, and the Bay of Sorrows on the fourth.

82 CE – Completion of the Kuor Chon, the wall of water, sometimes called a moat, which will separate the city of Hyb Ciuin from the rest of Anwyn.

83 CE – A small faction of Elves comprised of both Sylvari and Verdyri break with the Elven High Council on its policies on a number of policies, but most especially on certain magical studies on attempts to return to their home world, regardless of both priests and scholars telling them that the ways are closed and unlikely to ever re-open for at least a few thousand years. After the break, these Elves most to the northernmost forest in Tir Hoige and make their home there, away from prying eyes.

86 CE – The Elves of northern Tir Hoige, refusing to believe that they can never return home attempt a ritual to open a way to their home world. It not only fails miserably, it is botched in such a way that it has repercussions for both the forest itself and everybody living in it. The Elves in this location are transformed, and so is the forest around them.

87 CE – A small contingent of Elves travel north to check in on the Elves of the Northern Wood and what they find horrifies them. The forest itself appears to have been bleached of green, becoming more grey in color, and so it is given the name of Llydd Dwyg, the Grey Wood. The Elves living there were transformed as well. They had become their own Elven offshoot race, calling themselves the Yddari, or Grey Elves, due to their grayish skin tone, that also matched the forest.

88 CE – The city walls of Hyb Ciuin have been completed. Workers are brought in to construct the citadel, and various public buildings. The workers also build many smaller buildings as their own housing.

91 CE – The Voyagers discover that the worlds from which they originally came are closed to them. After much research, scholars determine that the exodus of the races from their native worlds overly stressed the Mother Road connections to the point that they can no longer sustain travel until they regenerate and replenish themselves. This means that the various races of Anwyn cannot return to their original worlds, not for a few centuries at least.

94 CE – A great fire destroys much of the city of Hyb Ciuin. It was started when a cow that had been removed from the stockyards kicked over a lantern. This prompted laws that allowed livestock such as cattle and even animals used as mounts, to only be allowed in certain areas without a special permit. Even taking a mount from the docks to one of the authorized ostlers requires a permit.

102 CE – The city of Hyb Ciuin is finished rebuilding. It becomes a hub of travel for those adventuring into the Tuist Rhion and into Ilthach as well.

111 CE – The first Outsider enters Hyb Ciuin, brought back to the city by a group of adventures. They had found the stranger wandering about the Esker Highlands. Outsiders are what people who come from other worlds are called.

117 CE – A plague spread among the Elven peoples. It affects the oldest, killing most who are over 300 years of age.

129 CE – Hyb Ciuin decides that it needs to build an outer moat, so that it can use the land between the two moats as pasture land and for some minor farming to reduce their dependence on imported foodstuffs. The city starts on plans for where and how to get the new moat dug.

130 CE – Present day



I am also thinking adding in some Human Nomadic tribesmen as well. They would be the same as the D'Anui physically, just different culturally.

I am pretty sure that I forgot to explain one of the reasons I am revising the Anwyn history....

Quite simply, my premise does not work fully do to  how the cosmology of Fantasy Express works.

According to the cosmology, the great spirits (i.e. the deities) cannot directly act upon the mortal world. This means that they could not interact  with Anwyn or with the peoples transported to it....

Now, I have already mentioned ruins of other races from earlier peoples who lived on ANwyn from time to time....

But what if I had a race similar to the Earthmasters from Harn or the Ka'Ta'Viri from Shadow Wolrd. Perhaps a race who was more in tune with a communicated more easily with higher powers. A race, who worked the will of the gods, in exchange for enlightenment and ascension. I would call them the Anki (based slightly on the Annunnaki), and maybe name their leader Amthor


It was these advanced beings, who at the behest of the deities anchored Anwyn (this would also explain why the anchors are imperfect, and this Ilthach and the Esker Highlands tend to have many  more links to other worlds/planes.

I also still need to think of how a small continent in a pocket dimension (if you sail east from Anwyn, you will eventually reach Anwyn's west coast) has a sun and a Moon and a stable calendar - What I am thinking is the 12 pillars, meaning 12 main ties to other worlds, each pillar lasts 30 days in rotation, and each is a variant of earth/midgard, and so the sun/moon is actually a side effect from the 12 pillars - the pillars themselves are nigh indestructible....

Anyways.. just some thoughts....

Here is the direction I am heading...


Ok, so when Anwyn was knocked loose and set adrift in the Ethereal Plane, it was in the Ethereal Plane, this is was covered in a glowing blue mist, and had no sun nor moon.

Then the Anki found it. The Anki were a highly advanced magical race, and they and their servants (lesser races), moved to Anwyn, and built places and worked on Anchoring it back to the Mortal Planes.

The best that they could do was to Anchor it in its own little poket dimension (the Servants of the Anki recorded some of their effforts, which is how current scholars know what happened).

Upon creation of the Anchors, Anwyn entered it own little pocket dimension, but the Anchors tied it to at least a dozen worlds that were so similar to one another that the sun and moon of these worlds were able to bleed through to Anwyn, providing it with that which it needed to survive.

However, the Anki made an error in judgement,  they had to take the form of Ethereal beings to survive on the Ethereal Plane to enact their plan. But when they Anchored Anwyn, they did not ANchor themselves or their Servants, and so they remained in the Ethereal Plane, either ascending or dying. Nobody is sure which.

Nobody is sure how long ago in Anwyn's history this happened either.

Part II

Across a number of different worlds, there appeared a Voyager, who called himself Amthor. Amthor appears to the people of those worlds as one of their own, and  spoke prophecies about upcoming catastrophies. He became known as Amthor the Harbinger. He often only appeared before catastrophies happened. This continued for milenia, with Amthor never seeming to age.

Then came a day where Amthor spoke of the destruction coming to their worlds, where all would die. However, unlike before, Amthor offered a chance at salvation. He could lead the peoples to a new land where they could survive and possibly thrive.

As he led them, he explained that they would not be the only peoples there, that he was rescuing others as well.. He also explained that the transit to this new land would also gift those that he lead with  a common language so that they could understand one another.

He led them to what appears to be natural  stone archways



And he cast a spell that filled them with a swirling blue mist that looked much like a tunnel and he bade the people to travel through, telling them that he placing them in a location where they could thrive as a people and that they should seek out the other peoples and woth together to build their new world.



And that is what I have so far....
