Should Speed Affect Action Points?
« on: March 30, 2011, 02:24:41 PM »
Should the Speed Stat allow you to perform more actions?

Would having a really high Speed stat give you more Action Points per round, or would a high Speed instead discount how many Action Points things cost?

It's just a thought that popped into my head when I watched a video on YouTube about a similar thing.

If we used more than 5 Action Points in a round, perhaps something along the lines of 20 AP per round (at a minimum - i.e. where 1 AP = 1/4 second as it were), I could easily see Speed being used as a factor on total number of AP, or on the AP of actions.

However, the number of AP are so few, and the AP cost of Actions are so small, that trying to adjust them using Speed (Value or Bonus) would require implementing some large equations to figure out how they would reflect things, which means having to create a table for every possible Speed variation. There is no simple one-to-one correlation between any of the factors involved.

So, to give a short answer - no, I don't think speed should not have a direct affect on number of AP per round or the AP cost of thing.

Now, an alternative AP system does sound like it would make for an interesting option on down the road, and that could be interesting....

Yeah, it's simpler to not include it.  It was just an idea that popped into my head.

It is one I have considered before. And as I explained above, the factors were such as to not include it. It came down to increasing AP making things more complicated, and I opted against that.

Maybe a certain high Speed number would give you a bonus action point to add at the end of your [standard] actions?

Maybe for extremely extremely high stats...

That could make for a good option -- super high stats that allow for special abilities -- something to think about for the future..

Nope.  I have played enough Hero to know that Speed is the #1 power creep in the system.  If you allow a single physical element to start weighting the who acts-how much debate, you step onto the slippery slope!

Like I said -- with only 5 APs, including Speed is too unbalancing... It would need a system that has at least 20 AP (and even then, only the Speed Bonus would be used). It would require using 100 AP per round before I would consider allowing the use of the Speed stat value.

Something like an unlockable perk might be cool though...

Maybe something like inhuman speed (over 20 speed stat) gives you an additional AP ?

or perhaps balance it with: with a high speed, you can get that extra AP, but at the cost of a penalty to your DEF? (any time you choose to use it - since you'd be focused on doing extra things, not on defending yourself?)

All interesting ideas -- but best saved for optional rules....
