Boons & Snags
« on: April 07, 2011, 08:47:13 PM »
I may be misunderstanding something about boons and snags (-12 on my rule understanding roll  ???.
As I read it, the rule says that as soon as you roll higher than the TN up to 10 points above, you earn a boon point, between 11 and 20 you earn 2... And same thing for the snags: as soon as you roll under the TN, you earn snags (1 between -1 and -10...).
Is it OK ?
Or should I rather understand that you earn 1 boon or snag for each full 10 points above/below TN. That is if you have TN20, you earn 1 boon point when you reach 30 or 1 snag when you roll 10 or under ?
The second explanation seems more logical to me, allowing for normal successes or failures.

It is 1 point for every FULL increment. So your second understanding is correct.

if the TN is 18, you earn a Boon point for rolls of 28+, 2 Boon Points for rolls of 38+, etc...

Hey, I have two questions about these.

If a player gains multiple snag/boon points, can they select the same thing multiple times? (My guess is no, but just checking)

Since players are responsible for their own snag points, do they have to select the most severe option every time (if they gain 2 snag points, do they have to buy a snag that's worth 2?) or is it the same as with boons? (they could buy 2 snags for 1 point if they wanted to?)

I would say that it is the GM's call as to whether or not they can select the same thing twice -- the thing to remember is that a x2 and a x2 doesn't equal x4, but only x3. for those Boons that work in that manner.

As for the Snags, again, the GM should make the final call (after discussing it with players), but for the most part, it is the player's choice (just like Boons).  While most will go for the lower cost ones, there will be the occasional player who does take the bigger one. (especially if you rule that you only receive the effects of 1 Snag per round, meaning that taking 2 or 3 1 point Snags means that they will take a Snag effect for each of 2 or 3 rounds in succession, as opposed to getting it all over with at once).

Cool, so it's up to the GM. Thanks!

I am a big believer in the GM being able to adapt the game to suit the tastes of both him and his players (GM always has final word, but he should discuss it with his players first -- is the philosophy I follow).
