Can Character Points be saved?
« on: April 26, 2011, 02:50:19 PM »
I looked and didn't see any statement telling me I couldn't save them up, but I didn't see it telling me I could either.  I apologize if I missed it, but I would like clarification.

Actually, I haven't decided on that issue yet. Currently, I am leaning more towards not allowing them to be saved, but allowing them to be spent on things across 2 levels (i.e. pay some DP for something in one level, then pay the rest the following level - of course, not gaining access to whatever it is until the full cost has been paid).

As it currently stands, there are only a few talents that cost more than a single level's worth of CP, and those are marked as not being Trainable (i.e. you can only purchase them during character generation), so this isn't likely to be a major issue.

And also - welcome to the forums.

How about being able to purchase Talent Points with them at a 1 for 1 basis; so you can slowly buy a talent?

Yes... I like that option best.

HUh? We don't have Talent Points in Novus, so I think that this suggestion would require a little bit more explanation.

I guess "Talents Points" would just add another unnecessary mechanic.  But, the idea was that you could start buying a talent with excess DPs (or even make it part of your character plan); you would just record the talent, then start buying it off over a few levels; but mot be able to use the talent until it is fully purchased.  This would simulate the trainable talents.

ahhhh.... will definitely consider it -- My worry there is the person who puts 1 CP per level into a talent each level, and/or wants to do this with multiple talents and/or wants to introduce a mechanics that allows it to be used (even sporadically) before it is fully purchased...

I supposed that could happen.  But, it might be nice trade off for a much more "realistic" development in Talents.  You could allow a boon point to be spent to use a partial talent?

If I allowed Talents to be purchased across levels, I would most likely want to include some limitations. Here is a short list off the top of my head.

  • No more than one talent may have its purchase spread across multiple levels at a time.
  • Not allowed to purchase any Talents while paying for a Talent across multiple levels.
  • Not allowed to purchase Talents outright, and then start paying for one across levels.
  • Must pay a minimum of 1/10th of the total cost each level until it is fully paid for.
  • If a player decides to abandon learning a Talent across multiple levels, he loses the points put into it - he does not regain those character points.
  • If a player later to decides to learn an abandoned Talent, he must start learning it from scratch. Point previously spent on the Talent are not and cannot be used. (might consider a 5 CP re-instatement fee to allow previously spent points to be used, but in such cases, that fee would need to be paid in full and upfront, and the character would not be allowed to spend on anything else until the Talent is finished being learned).

The basic idea being to prevent this capability from being used to grab one or more Talents and partially pay for them when first creating them (i.e. paying 1 point each into 5 high cost talents). It is also meant to insure that once learning a Talent is started it is completed.

While the idea of using a Boon Point to allow use of a partially learned Talent, it seems impractical since Boon Points are earned for achieving exceptional rolls, thus since Boon Points are never kept (it is earn and use immediately only), it seems unlikely that that would work.

However, allowing the use of a Fate Point to allow a single usage (of up to a duration of 10 minutes, if applicable) seems much more logical to me.

Let me think about this a bit more....
