Learning Spells
« on: May 14, 2011, 01:21:11 AM »
While creating a spell casting character the "Learning Spells" section caught my eye.

Imagine finding the dusty bones of a long- dead adventurer, deep in the bowels of a dungeon. You gingerly open the adventurer's pack, finding a spell book amongst other items! Quickly opening the book, you flip its pages and notice faded arcane scrawlings on one of the pages.

The player makes a Magecraft (Decipher) test to identify the spell- TN 15 + Spell Point Cost. The spell has a TN of 19. The player rolls well. It's a Flash spell!

Next the player decides she wants to learn the Flash spell. Can her character learn the spell right now? In the dungeon? How long will it take?

I didn't see it anywhere, but I am suggesting that a spell take 1 hour, per Spell Point Cost, to learn. Once a spell has been learned, and paid for, it may be written in the caster's spell book.

What do you guys think?

In my opinion, a caster's "spell book" is more of a collection of notes and observations and hints and so forth, rather than an actual spell (that would be a scroll). So, I wouldn't allow learning between level gains, and certainly not in the middle of a dungeon.

Once a character in Novus learns a spell, he knows it forever, so there is not really any need to copy spells into a spell book. Like I said, I envision it more as a book of notes and research material for spells that have already been learned (thus, while a caster's book can be used to learn spells, it takes research and time and other sources).
