Currently, the Base Damage for a Weapon Kata is equal to the Base Damage of the Hand Strike (4) and the Base Damage of the Kata Weapon.

This would give a Quarterstaff (BD I think that this is more balanced overall.

That will be a strong motivation to use lighter weapons with kata.
I adher with your conception but it may seem a little strange that a two-handed sword becomes less damaging when wielded by an expert martial artist though (10/2+4=9 base damage with kata, 10 without).

ahh... but the 2 handed sword isn't being used it is nominally designed to (i.e. using the proper skill for it), but as part of a weapon kata (adv. MA skill).

it makes the Martial Art more deadly (which is its primary purpose...).

but if I need to I can make a small addition (i.e. "Base Damage for the Kata is equal to 4+ 1/2 the weapon's Base Damage OR the Weapon's Base Damage, whichever is higher".

That would still be better than having a pole arm doing 15 points of Base Damage...

OTOH, a weapon dealing 15 base damage... I cannot see what's wrong here. Just where can I buy one ?
