Hex/Grid Movement?
« on: May 18, 2012, 03:39:43 AM »
Hey guys, quick question. I'm having some issues trying to figure out the tactical movement for my players using grid/hex maps. What's the proper conversion in-game?

While Novus doesn't require that you use a hex/grid map for play, it is designed (partially) to make using such simple if you want to use them.

Most maps that have hexes or squares on them will use a scale of about 5' per hex/square, which should work just fine for  Novus (which uses multiples of 5 for most all things using movement or range). If using 5' squares/hexes, then if a character spends 2 AP moving at a run (20' per AP), he can move a total of 40' or 8 squares/hexes.

Additionally, since the Control Zones are also 5', that would make it 1 hex/square around the character.

What sort of difficulties where you having in particular? If we knew specifically what the exact issues were, it would be easier to give specific answers instead of generalized one (which may not be helpful if I misunderstood what exactly you were asking).

I find movement on hex map fairly easy, one hex = 5' regardless of crossing line boundaries, such as:

Hex/Grid Movement?

Oh no no, hex and grid movement itself isnt difficult, I was merely looking to see what the grid to game distance ratio would be for movement. I know most systems use 5' or 1 meter per hex/square as their base, I was wondering if Novus did the same, I couldnt find anything on it in the guide. Some of my players were arguing about what the ratio could be and I wanted to make sure what would be the best suggestion before I ran my next game. Perhaps a small note in the finished version of the rulebook on this conversion would be best as a suggestion for those using hexes and grids? My own players use a mix of hexes and miniature terrain.

Thanks for the very prompt and helpful hints guys, I also appreciated the images you posted.

But Novus actually doesn't use any sort of grid or hex system internally, nor does it assume that players do as well, that is why there no mention of such. However, the we do recognize that the standard is 5'/1 m per square or hex, and if you look at the entry for Control Zone, it presumes a 5' control zone (and that image shows 1 hex as the control zone, so the base assumption is 5' per hex).

If it had differed from that base assumption of 5' per, then I would have made specific note of that..
