Update on Libram Novus #7
« on: March 08, 2013, 01:23:18 AM »
Since it has been a few months since I have released anything, and since I seem to keep having to deal with personal distractions whenever I try to work on it, I thought that I would take a few moments to update you on what Libram Novus #7 will contain.

It will start off with guidelines for creating new races. This will include guidelines for making Unique Races and Half Races (which may actually be a separate stand-alone race - such as an entire race of "Half-Elves" - as well as a single offspring of parents from separate races). completed

The next item in the issue will be to show the Building Block breakdown for all of the core Novus races. completed

Then I will do a Building Block breakdown for the core Novus Monster Races (Goblin, Hobgoblin, Kobold, & Orc). in progress

Next up, I will be including 6 new races (Aesyr, Centaur, Gnome, Lizardman, Rachni (the spider-folk from Tyrlon), Ursoc (i.e. bugbears)). For these guys, I will simply add the "point costs" to the standard racial descriptions, adding a note to the racial description of any race that requires an expenditure of CPs to acquire. in progress

Finally, I will be adding guidelines for creating Kindred Talents (completed) and giving a list of examples of these Talents already pre-made (in progress)). Thus, your character, during character creation only!! Will be able to acquire a something like a Major Elf-kin Talent or  both a Minor Dwarf-kin and Minor Gnome-kin Talent (i.e. you are allowed 1 Major or 2 Minor Kindred Talents). There are also Special Kindred Talents - (such as a Dragon-kin Talent) - These may require the character to start at a higher level than first. These special Kindred Talents are likely to usually be acquired only through some sort of magical agency (ritual, spell, wish, etc...).

If things go well, I will actually get this finished this weekend, and released sometime next week.

Okay, an update.... The manuscript for this is currently sitting at 11,630 words and I have everything complete except for the pre-made Kindred Talents (everything else is done, but I am half-way sort of encountering writers block on them, and the best solution to writer's block is often to go write something else). And if I cut the Kindred Talents and save them for the next issue, that still leaves me with 9,821 Words (but I would still need to, at least, add monster stat blocks for the new monster races, to allow GMs to use them for that...)

The reason that I am mentioning this is because a standard 12 page issue runs about 9,000 Words in total, so I am already over that, and will be over that no matter what.

I want to get this issue finished, so I am thinking that I will move the Kindred Talents to the next issue, toss in some Monster Stat Blocks/Entries (similar to what is in the core book), and then call it a day, and come back to the Kindred Talents in the next issue. How does that sound? Doing it this way, I should have the issue done and maybe out no later than this Friday (most likely sooner).

Sounds good to me too.  After I go through the core book I plan to get the Libram bundle and any other Librams not in the bundle.  Sounds like great stuff.

I would say that this kindred talent would be well-placed in the LN dealing with races. I realize it is more work for you but you can have some help with it if you need it. :

Release v1 of LN #7 with an addendum to be released when finished. Then update the PDF and let us all know. We can download v2 when you get Kindred Talents done (which sound AMAZING!). I also think these would be awesome for those of us writing up a setting and wanting to customize races for it! I am waiting on baited breath for this release.

I really hate the idea of  updating a PDF (I know that I have done it plenty of times in the past, but I always hate doing it, as it makes me feel a bit bad that I didn't get it fully correct in the first place).

And to purposely do it? For the sole purpose of adding more material later (and I would have to set the price to be along the lines of what I think the finished product would be), that would make me feel like I was cheating folks....

Okay, now on to an actual update....

I have finished all of the races (there will be six new races in total -- Aesyr, Centaur, Gnomes, Lizardmen, Rachni, Ursoc), and I have the Kindred Talents for all bit two of the races (that is Major & Minor Kindred Talents for 12 races so far) figured out (though I have none of them written up yet).

I also want to include at least 1 Special kindred Talent (i.e. something like "Dragon-Kin" -- and this will be REALLY cool!!)

However,, without any of the Kindred Talents written up yet, I am sitting at 13,000 words (average 12 page issue is approximately 9,000 words), so we will likely be looking at a $4 or $5 price tag for the final PDF of this issue (and somewhere in the 15-20 page range most likely)

I should have the last of the Kindred talents figured out tonight (there have been lots of real-life interruptions!!!) and if that is the case, I hope to get them all written up by Wed or Thurs (at the latest -- my son turns 20 tomorrow, and he wants a BBQ here at home, so tomorrow evening will be a bit busy...), and then pagemaking it and it will be ready...

Another update....

I have talked previously about Major Kindred (half-bloods) and Minor Kindreds (quarter bloods), and I have mentioned Special Kindred...

One such example would be a Dragon Kindred

A player whose character is a Dragon Kindred (no Major or Minor here), would basically start that character off at 4th level and have 23 Character Points to spend in making the character (i.e. basically he is first level when it comes to skill bonuses, but 4th level in terms of overall capability/power).

This afternoon, I will finish all of the Kindred Talent write-ups and then start pagemaking everything for release.

All I have left to write up are the Kindred Talents for the Ursoc and the Dragon-kin, and then I can start pagemaking. If I do not finish the pagemaking tonight, it might be Saturday or Sunday (or even Monday) before it is ready for release as I have to work the next 3 days and won't know how much time I will actually have to work on it (or how tired I will be after work).

Okay, the writing is finished!  Now to take a short break before I start pagemaking it.....

The issue ended up being 19,062 words, this is more than double what a normal 12 page issue comes in at....

The average word count for a 12 page issue of Libram Novus is approximately 9,000 words, so we are looking at closer to 23-24 pages easy...
