So, a thought occurred to me wile we were posting about making skills "independent" from Stats. It'll be a bit of a blurb to try and explain it really...but, here it is.
Basically, instead of having Stats yield a bonus that is added to your Skill to your then roll vs. a TN. Why not make your Stat the TN?
Stat Range Bonus Check+
19-21 +3 10+
16-18 +2 11+
13-15 +1 12+
10-12 +0 13+
7-9 -1 14+
So, players would record a skill bonus and then roll vs. the applicable stat for everything except Attacks (which would be handled normally.
Example: Rick the Scout has +3 in Outdoorsman Skill. He is looking for Tracks so he rolls 2d10 and adds +3 vs. Wisdom of (15)12+, the GM can add a modifier as per Libram (whatever Tim reminds me of). Finding them, he then wants to figure out what kind of creature he might be tracking. He rolls 2d10 +3 vs. Intelligence of (12)13+.
To take this a step further you could eliminate the stat values all together and assign Primary 11+, Secondary 12+, Everyman 13+, and Restricted 15+ values to the 8 Stats. Perhaps have each class assign 1 or 2 and each races assign 1 or 2 values?
The end result being- all the TNs you would ever use would be contained on your character sheet. I think this could be an interesting alternative to using the Stat+Skill mechanic.
Thoughts?
